Is this a trick question? Water is water, right? Well, not exactly. When it comes to choosing between bottled water and tap water as it relates to the care of your teeth there are a couple of things to consider.
Does your municipality/city add fluoride to its water?
Many cities across the country add a small amount of fluoride to its water. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that has been proven to strengthen teeth and prevent cavities. Cities that are adding fluoride to its water follow strict guidelines to make sure they are adding the correct amount.
Does your bottled water contain fluoride?
Most bottled waters do not contain fluoride as the bottling process removes substances that may affect the taste.
Will grabbing a bottle of water prevent you from grabbing a sugary soft drink?
Water – whether bottled or tap – is always preferred to that of drinking a sugary beverage when it comes to your dental health.
So, if your tap water contains fluoride, tap water is preferred to bottled water. And of course, given the choice between drinking a soda vs. water – bottled or tap – always go for the water.
Fluoride has proven benefits to your oral health. If you’re not sure if your tap water contains fluoride, a quick call to your local water treatment facility can you provide you with the answer.
